Monopoly Game
The classic board game of Monopoly was introduced in 1936 when game company Parker Brothers purchased the game from inventor Charles Darrow. Monopoly came about during the great Despression when Charles Darrow was reflecting on his summer spent as a child in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In his free time he was constructing the pieces while he forming the game in his mind. Family and friends gathered at Charles' home to play the game. It became a favorite amongst his friends.
Buying and selling and renting real estate, it helped many get a little break from what was going on at that time. His friends soon expressed how they wanted to play the game at their home so they could share it with others. That led to the game being produced and sold for four dollars.
Charles did reach out to the Parker Brothers when production was getting to be too much for one to handle. They turned him down saying the game was too long and complicated. Charles kept going. Things changed when a friend of Sally Barton, daughter of George Parker and wife of Robert B. M. Barton, had the game and raved how great Monopoly was. Mr Barton listened to his wife and contacted Charles. The Parker Brothers purchased the game as well as giving royalties to Charles on every game sold. In return Charles permitted a shorter version with rules could be made.
Charles Darrow was the first game inventor to become a millionaire. Monopoly is still enjoyed by many and is considered a great classic toy.
